Dermal Filler AfterCare

What to expect

Bruising/Swelling: You may develop some bruising within the next day after injection. This is a common side effect and is normal. Bruising typically resolves within a week. Mild swelling may also occur initially after treatment. This will subside over the course of the next few days to a week.

Lumps/Bumps: You may see or feel some small bumps in the injected areas. These are due to the injected product and they will often smooth out on their own over the following weeks. You do not need to massage the areas, and Dr. Andrea can lightly massage at a follow up as needed.

Mild discomfort or minor pain: You may feel mild discomfort or minor pain within the first few days, particularly around the injection site. This should typically resolve within a few days to a week.

Final Results: It can take up to 4-8 weeks to see the full effects from your filler treatment, as your own collagen is produced and the filler blends in nicely with your skin. Please note that follow up appointments are ideally booked 4-6 weeks after your treatment to allow for the final results to settle in before any adjustments are made.

Under-Eye Treatments Final Results: It is common for the under-eye filler treatment to look perfect the first few days, and you may develop some swelling or shifting of the product a few days to a few weeks later, which may look like puffiness in the under eyes or cheeks. This can be easily corrected by Dr. Andrea at your follow up appointment, which is recommended to be booked for 4 weeks after your treatment.

What to avoid

Make up/Skin Care: It is recommended to avoid any makeup application in the first 12 hours after injection. You may wash your face and apply regular skin care (moisturizer) gently a few hours after treatment, avoiding aggressive scrubbing or rubbing.

Exercise /Heat exposure: Avoid any strenuous exercise for the next 24 hours. Avoid exposure to very hot temperatures like a sauna or very hot shower, and extended exposure in the sun/UV rays for the next 24 hours. Avoid hot tubs for 1 week.

Sleep: Try not to sleep on your face for the next 24 hours, particularly after cheek filler.

Dental Procedures/Skin Treatments/Vaccines: Avoid dental procedures or any other skin treatments or vaccines for 2 weeks after your filler treatment.

Cold Sores: If you are prone to getting cold sores, please advise us and Dr. Andrea can prescribe an anti-viral medication for you (Valtrex) to help prevent a flare, particularly for any lip filler treatments.

When to contact us

Severe pain or skin discolouration: You may feel mild discomfort within the first few days. However, if you notice that your skin appears pale or blue (mottled appearance) and you experience increasing/significant pain, you should call the office immediately and Dr. Andrea may need to dissolve filler in that area. You are only at risk of these rare issues for the 1-3 days after injection.

If you have any questions or concerns please call the office at 416-410-1818.
